10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - SEO for blogs

1

Written on 12:16 AM by Mrudula

Blogs and blog posts are naturally search engine friendly because they are text-rich, link-rich, frequently-updated webpages that use stylesheets or CSS, and have very little extraneous HTML.

Optimizing a blog is very similar to optimizing a website, and optimizing a blog post similar to optimizing a web page.

But depending on the blogging service or software you use, the results may look somewhat different.

If you follow some simple rules for search engine optimization, your blog can rank much higher than static website pages in the search engine results pages.

Here are the most important rules to follow to get your posts listed for keywords of your choice.
1. Use your primary keyword in your blog domain

Whether you purchase a separate domain (recommended) for your blog, or host it on a blogging service or a subdomain of your own site, try to ensure that your URL contains the primary keyword you want to optimize for.

But if you're doing it for business and want the targeted traffic to flow your way, keywords in the domain or subdomain are a move in the right direction.
2. Use your primary key phrase in your blog header tags and the title of your posts

If your primary key phrase is "business blogging" make sure that the word business, or blogging, or both, appear in your blog headers (the H1 or H2 tags) as well as the title of each of your posts.

Most blogging software will take the keywords in your post title and put them into the file name of the permalink posts it creates.

3. Use your secondary keywords in the body of your post

If you want to get listed for secondary keywords use them infrequently in the body of your post and pepper your blog titles or links with them appropriately.

Don't overdo this or your posts will end up sounding unnatural and spammy to readers.
4. Use your keywords in the anchor text of links

Keyword in links have more importance than simple text.

Use your primary and secondary keywords in the anchor text of links when linking to other blog posts or to other pages on your main site.

Link keywords where they naturally appear in the body text, but again, don't overdo it, or you'll end up with spammy looking pages.
5. Make sure search engines can spider your blog easily

Set up your blog so that the side navigation bar is present on all pages.

Make sure your archives and previous posts are accessible from all pages of your blog so they get spidered easily.
6. Get backlinks from other blogs or websites

Links pointing to your blog or posts are essential to build pagerank and make your blog rank higher in the search engine listings.

I've seen many people recommend Blogrolling as one method of building links to your blog.

BlogRolling is a one-stop linklist manager for your blog or journal. But all this service actually does is give you a bit of javascript code that "calls" the links.

As far as search engine rankings go, this method of linking is of little use, because spiders can't read external javascript code.

Instead I recommend that you focus your linking efforts on the methods here.

Submitting to Blog Search Engines and Directories:

Submitting your blog and RSS feed to blog search engines and directories is essential for getting high-quality links back to your blog.

Here is the best list I've found of places to submit your feed or blog.

Best Blog Directory And RSS Submission Sites

Link Exchanges:

Many similarly-themed blogs are often willing to exchange links with other blogs and form richly interlinked networks or communities. Link exchanges with other blogs are easy to implement with most blogging software.

Trackbacks:

You can also get links back to your blog using trackbacks. One of the disadvantages of using Blogger is that it does not automatically create trackback urls that others can use to link back to your posts.

Haloscan is a free service that will automatically add comments and trackbacks to your Blogger blog.

But if trackbacks are an important component of your linking strategy, I would advise using another software or system that adds this feature automatically.

Comments:

You can also get back links to your blog by posting legitimate comments in response to posts on other blogs.
7. Update frequently

There's no better food for search engine spiders than fresh content.

Post and update your blog frequently using all the rules outlined above and there's no reason why your blog will not get you top rankings in a short period of time.
8. Stay put

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Off Page SEO

There is no doubt that SE pays a lot of attention to off-page factors. If you are building links to your website and getting those inbound links from various different sources such as article marketing, blog commenting, directory submissions, forum signatures, web 2.0 sites and so forth then there will be a high chance your site will rank high.

Let us discuss in detail

Article Marketing:

Article marketing is a type of advertising in which businesses write short articles related to their respective industry. These articles are made available for distribution and publication in the marketplace. When you have finished writing your article save it and submit it as a text file. Most people write using Microsoft word, or some other word processing software that uses their own formating code embedded in the article. You don’t see it, but the search engines do and it could harm
the listing of the directory web page containing your article.

PR Marketing:

There was a time when press releases were only for the press, sent to a handful of targeted journalists in hopes of being mentioned in a story they were researching.According to the last National Association of Realtors survey, approximately 80% of prospective homebuyers begin their real estate searches online, looking an average of four or five properties before calling an agent.

Blogs Commenting:

Blog marketing is the term used to describe internet marketing via web blogs. These blogs differ from corporate websites because they feature daily or weekly posts, often around a single topic. Typically, corporations use blogs to create a dialog with customers and explain features of their products and services. The benefits of blog marketing are almost unlimited. Through business blog marketing, you can draw your customers and potential customers into conversations, giving your company an interactive forum on the web. When you share ideas, you engage your website’s visitors in industry-specific dialogue that years of traditional market research might not uncover. Your corporate blog might help you to develop a rapport with your customers, allowing you to take part in their discussions, receive feedback and build trust.Another key benefit of blog marketing is search engine visibility. Fresh new content updated regularly and natural inbound links from related sites are two important components in maximizing a site’s visibility to the search engines.

Directory Submissions:

One major advantage of directory submission is that it is an easy and rapid way to create link dispersion on search engines without needing to spend too much. Also avoid bulky submission services, as it is very difficult to check the quality of such directories. It is vital for you to select the most appropriate category for your web site.

Forum Signatures:

Participate in various forums related to the website and provide a text link to the website.

Web 2.0:

Web 2.0 is a living term describing changing trends in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity, information sharing, collaboration and functionality of the web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. The term became notable after the first O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004. Participate in various social networking sites. Create groups and participate in various groups. Provide polls and surveys.

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Navigation

0

Written on 12:07 AM by Mrudula

A good navigation is more important that search spiders have plenty of basic links to follow & it also helps visitors navigate through the website efficiently in as few clicks as possible.  Search engine spiders will index the text on your homepage, then attempt to follow links from there to other pages in your site.  These are the basics to getting your site indexed within search engines.

It is important to note that site navigation is not just about allowing spiders to index, but also to improve theme and relevance of other website pages.  Navigation menus and text links help optimize the internal linking structure of your website and allow pages to rank better in search engines, since all the web pages are interconnected and tell the engines what those pages are about within the links.

Lastly, within the site navigation - either on the left navigation or within the content copy of site pages, it is also crucial to use keyword rich anchor text links to bring the page relevance and page reputation to the internal linking structure that search engines use to help in higher rankings and Page Rank.

Key Considerations When Developing Your Site Navigation

    * Search Engines traverse a site by following both internal and external links.  If a page is not accessible by a link from somewhere, it won’t be ‘seen’ by the search engines.
    * Using keyword anchor text links in a left navigation provides page relevance and internal link reputation - in addition, all those keyword links will travel from page to page because they are in the left navigation panel.
    * Using JavaScript menus is one way to confuse search engine spiders. Most spiders aren’t able to execute client side code such as JavaScript. As such, they aren’t able to ‘see’ links imbedded in JavaScript code, like the links in many of the commonly used JavaScript menus that expand when a user rolls over a link.
    * As a general rule, if the links to your other pages aren’t simple HREF tags, then the search engines may not recognize it as a link to follow.
    * Internal linking, and especially link anchor text, is a very important factor in pages showing up and ranking in search engines.  Use targeted keywords within your anchor text to increase relevancy and improve positioning.
    * In many cases, especially in a large site, the only links to certain pages are internal. That’s why it’s very important to make sure all pages have visibility through a hard coded link.  A simple way to accomplish this is through a site map.
    * Links are also how Google determines how to pass Page Rank.  Although Page Rank is not the deciding factor in where a page ranks in the organic results for a particular key phrase, it is an important component of Google’s ranking algorithm.  Typically, the internal pages of a site will have the same Page Rank as the home page, or at least be within two variations.  If this is not occurring, more optimization is needed.

There are several solutions that allow web sites to develop robust internal linking networks while at the same time not overcrowding pages with hard-coded links. The following are just a few examples:

    * Site Map – a page that has a hard coded link to every page in the site. Make sure a link to the site map is hard-coded onto every page, usually in the footer.  On the site map page itself, also use keyword rich anchor text links to help the page relevance and page reputation.
    * Convert navigation menus from JavaScript to CSS layering in combination with JavaScript instead of pure JavaScript to replicate the fold out menu experience for the user.
    * Convert navigation menus from GIF images to CSS layering in tables or JavaScript combination to ensure that anchor text exist within href link coding.
    * JavaScript can be used to hide or show layers on the page. These layers contain hard-coded links. Even though these layers aren’t seen by a visitor until he or she clicks, they are visible to search engine spiders.
    * A robust and properly done site navigation system will include internal cross linking and will facilitate search engine crawling, indexing, and ranking all pages in the site.
    * Navigation can also be in the form of embedded links within the page content.  When using embedded links within content copy, keep in mind to use keyword anchor text for reputation.

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Content Optimization

1

Written on 12:06 AM by Mrudula

Content Optimization is most important aspect of ranking your website highly on the search enginesThere are aspects of the optimization process that gain and lose importance. Content optimization is no exception to this. Through the many algorithm changes that take place each year, the weight given to the content on your pages rises and falls. Currently incoming links appear to supply greater advantage than well-written and optimized content. So why are we taking an entire article in this series to focus on the content optimization?

The goal for anyone following this series is to build and optimize a website that will rank well on the major search engines and, more difficult and far more important, hold those rankings through changes in the search engine algorithms. While currently having a bunch of incoming links from high PageRank sites will do well for you on Google you must consider what will happen to your rankings when the weight given to incoming links drops, or how your website fares on search engines other than Google that don't place the same emphasis on incoming links.

Special Text

"Special text" (as it is used here) special is any content on your page that is set to stand out from the rest. This includes bold, underlined, colored, highlighted, sizing and italic. This text is given weight higher than standard content and rightfully so. Bold text, for example, is generally used to define sub-headings (see above), or to pull content out on a page to insure the visitor reads it. The same can be said for the other "special text" definitions.

Search engines have thus been programmed to read this as more important than the rest of the content and will give it increased weight. For example, on our homepage we begin the content with "Beanstalk Search Engine Optimization …" and have chosen to bold this text. This serves two purposes. The first is to draw the eye to these words and further reinforce the "brand". The second purpose (and it should always be the second) is to add weight to the "Search Engine Positioning" portion of the name. It effectively does both.

Reread your content and, if appropriate for BOTH visitors and search engines, use special text when it will help draw the eye to important information and also add weight to your keywords. This does not mean that you should bold every instance of your targeted keywords nor does it mean that you should avoid using special text when it does not involve your keywords. Common sense and a reasonable grasp of sales and marketing techniques should be your guide in establishing what should and should not be drawn out with "special text".

Inline Text Links

Inline text links are links added right into text in the verbiage of your content. For example, in this article series I may make reference to past articles in the series. Were I to refer to the article on keyword selection, rather than simply making a reference to it as I just have it might be better to write it as, "Were I to refer to the article on keyword selection rather …"

Like special text this serves two purposes. The first is to give the reader a quick and easy way to find the information you are referring to. The second purpose of this technique is to give added weight to this phrase for the page on which the link is located and also to give weight to the target page.

While this point is debatable, there is a relatively commonly held belief that inline text links are given more weight that a text link which stands alone. If we were to think like a search engine this makes sense. If the link occurs within the content area then chances are it is highly relevant to the content itself and the link should be counted with more strength than a link placed in a footer simply to get a spider through the site.

Like "special text" this should only be employed if it helps the visitor navigate your site. An additional benefit to inline text links is that you can help direct your visitors to the pages you want them on. Rather than simply relying on visitors to use your navigation bar as you are hoping they will, with inline text links you can link to the internal pages you are hoping they will get to such as your services page, or product details.

Keyword Density

For those of you who have never heard the term "keyword density" before, it is the percentage of your total content that is made up of your targeted keywords. There is much debate in forums, SEO chat rooms and the like as to what the "optimal" keyword density might be. Estimates seem to range from 3% to 10%.

While I would be the first to admit that logic dictates that indeed there is an optimal keyword density. Knowing that search engines operate on mathematical formulas implies that this aspect of your website must have some magic number associated with it that will give your content the greatest chance of success.

With this in mind there are three points that you should consider:

   1. You do not work for Google or Yahoo! or any of the other major search engines (and if you do you're not the target audience of this article). You will never know 100% what this "magic number" is.
   2. Even if you did know what the optimal keyword density was today, would you still know it after the next update? Like other aspects of the search engine algorithm, optimal keyword densities change. You will be chasing smoke if you try to constantly have the optimal density and chances are you will hinder your efforts more than help by constantly changing the densities of your site.
   3. The optimal keyword density for one search engine is not the same as it is for another. Chasing the density of one may very well ruin your efforts on another.

So what can you do? Your best bet is to simply place your targeted keyword phrase in your content as often as possible while keeping the content easily readable by a live visitor. Your goal here is not to sell to search engines, it is to sell to people. I have seen sites that have gone so overboard in increasing their keyword density that the content itself reads horribly. If you are simply aware of the phrase that you are targeting while you write your content then chances are you will attain a keyword density somewhere between 3 and 5%. Stay in this range and, provided that the other aspects of the optimization process are in place, you will rank well across many of the search engines.

Also remember when you're looking over your page that when you're reading it the targeted phrase may seem to stand out as it's used more than any other phrase on the page and may even seem like it's a bit too much. Unless you've obviously overdone it (approached the 10% rather than 5% end of the spectrum) it's alright for this phrase to stand out. This is the phrase that the searcher was searching for. When they see it on the page it will be a reminder to them what they are looking for and seeing it a few times will reinforce that you can help them find the information they need to make the right decision.

Lastly 4 things to recheck

1. Include keywords in text
2. Consider 5-20% density of the keywords in text
3. Mind the formatting of the text
4. Add regularly relevant content to site

* Web 2.0 style names (IE Flickr) are all the rage (mostly because the real words are already taken
* Maximum character limit - 63 characters plus the TLD

Canonical URL Optimization

GoogleBot treats xyz.com and www.xyz.com as two different web addresses, by which every page can be accessed as both www. and non-www. could get a split PR. Google also treats this as duplicate pages and punishes you for this. To resolve canonical issue problem, follow following steps :

1. Create a .htaccess file in the web root dir.
2. Copy and paste the following contents in it

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.sample\.com$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.sample.com/$1 [R=301,L]
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /(([^/]+/)*)index\.html\ HTTP/
RewriteRule index\.html$ http://www.sample.com/%1 [R=301,L]

3. Save the file and upload it to the root path of your web site.

And the other way is to use 301 (permanent) Redirection.

Redirect www.xyz.com to xyz.com or vise verse.

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Header Tag (Hx Tags)

0

Written on 12:51 AM by Mrudula

Having a clearly defined H1 Header tag on a page says the search engines, "Here is the primary subject of this page.", which will help your rankings for that phrase & also Well-written header text informs visitors and helps them navigate through your page - maybe keeping them at your site longer

It's important to have only one H1 tag per page. You can certainly have multiple headlines appearing on a page, but only ONE of them should actually be inside the H1 tag, and that should be your primary key phrase targeted for that page. Having multiple H1 tags may now actually be subject to a penalty by the search engines, and is seen in the same light as "keyword stuffing".

If you feel there are valid reasons to use multiple headlines, and in many cases there are, then use H2 tags, H3 tags etc.. or use bolded text in the same size as the header text. Your readers will see the same thing, but the search engines will only see one H1 tag.

Don't confuse header tags with the HEAD section of your Web page. Header tags belong in the BODY section of your document.

Use the HEAD section for your TITLE and META tags.

The most important header tag is the H1 tag: its content should approximate the content in your document TITLE. Use the

subheadings under the H1 tag to indicate different document sections.

Use header tags as a navigational aid on long pages to help visitors quickly scan page content. They can easily determine

where new topics are introduced and find what they're interested in.

All over the World

India

Andhara Pradesh

Hyderabad

Old City

Charminar Road

Bangels bazar

All other things being completely equal, I believe that the page with a higher keyword relevance percentage in the header tag would win the better SERP. Remove non relevant words from the header, and you raise that relevance percentage.

People don't read the same way online as they do in print. They're more apt to scan a document quickly and move on if it doesn't catch their interest. Web site visitors use document headings and subheadings to scan the page for interesting content.

Long pages full of unbroken text look pretty boring online, so use header tags to pique visitors' interest in your content sections. Header content describes what's on your page, so make sure it's descriptive and compelling.

But remember that you can also use header tags to appeal to search engines. Some search engines analyze text inside header tags and use it to rank Web pages. They assume that anything important enough to put in larger text is also relevant to the

page's content.

The H1 tag is by far the most important: it describes the purpose of the whole site. Search engine spiders will use it to score your page's relevancy. Make it a more succinct version of your page's TITLE tag and include important keywords. The sub headers decline in importance relative to their size, but they're still useful: be sure you include keywords there too.

Never use header tags as a substitute for the FONT tag. Use FONT tags or Cascading Style Sheets to emphasize words on your site. A search engine spider that finds this code:

Enroll Now!

would assume that your page is about "Enroll Now" and not about a cooking class or volunteer training session. Same for H2 to H6

One thing that I frequently like to do with header tags is make them an actual link. This points to another relevant area of the website and gives the landing page a deep link to an internal page, with the correct anchor text, prominently placed in the body of the webpage.

Although your header text is the logical place to include keywords, don't neglect your page content. Even search engines that don't place more weight on keywords in header text use keyword frequency as part of the page's overall score. Sprinkle keywords and their synonyms liberally throughout your text and inside many HTML codes.

But be reasonable too. You don't want your content to sound stilted or repetitive. Too much repetition may get your page penalized both by visitors and search engines!

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Anchor text, Alt Tag & Title Tag

Now let us discuss about Anchor Text and Alta & Title Tags.

Anchor Text:

Those who have done some serious reading about search engine optimization, probably would have come across the phrase 'anchor text optimization' or 'optimization of anchor text'.

The anchor text or link label is the visible, click able text in a hyperlink.

Anchor Text Enhances the Relevance of the Target Page. Keywords in anchor text enhance the relevance of the target page pertaining to the keywords used. While the relevance of the page containing the anchor text is also enhanced to some degree The inclusion of important keywords in the anchor text can make a big difference in the ranking of your site pages. All search engines that matter, give significant weight to the anchor text on your pages. In fact Google even has a special operator: allinanchor:keyword', which picks up text only from within the anchor text of indexed pages. For example:

Anchor text optimization can be deployed throughout your site to enhance the relevance of most of the web pages based on individual page content. You would be surprised, how easy it is, to find suitable instances of hyper linking structures to make use of optimized anchor text.
When linking to internal pages, it is better to use the format:

Instead of

The above example shows us that you can leverage the hyper linking of important keyword phrases instead of hyper linking unrelated text wherever possible. It is always a great idea to restructure sentences if keywords don't fit in anchor text.

Using Keywords in Natural Text to Create Anchor Text
You can also locate (or insert) important keyword phrases in your page's natural text and link it to relevant target pages of your site. Consider the paragraph below: -

Search Engine Optimization is an important part of any search engine marketing initiative. Some people believe that submitting the site to search engines alone is sufficient in getting top-10 ranking. This is not true. Search engine submission only announces your site’s existence to search engines. To get a good search engine ranking, it is important that you carry out Title tag optimization, Meta tags optimization and anchor text optimization of your website amongst other SEO techniques. You’ll need to optimize the visible text of your site through SEO copy writing after an extensive keyword phrase research. It is also important to boost your Google Page Rank in order to get a good website ranking. You can increase Page Rank of your site by building your site’s link popularity through a link building campaign. A link exchange campaign with good industry relevant sites is the simplest way to get several incoming links to your site quickly. Remember, search engine positioning is a powerful media for your website promotion.

Now notice below how the above text is reformatted where highly relevant keyword phrases have been converted into powerful anchor text. Each keyword phrase links to an important relevant section of the same site -

Search Engine Optimization is an important part of any search engine marketing initiative. While the above example seems like overkill, this is just to illustrate how you can accommodate your important keyword phrases by carefully rewording the text of your web pages. If you feel that the standard blue underlined hyperlinks appear ugly on your website, then you can re-format its HTML markup code to change color of the text and get rid of the underline without losing the power of the anchor text.
You may not have noticed, but the first paragraph also has the same keywords hyper linked, but without usual underlines. Bring your mouse over the keywords to notice your cursor show up the hyperlink.

Optimizing Anchor Text of External Links

Keywords within the anchor text are equally useful from links pointing to your website. If you are pursuing or considering a link building campaign, put some serious thought in writing multiple options of the title and description of the link pointing to your website.

The "title" which is usually used as the hyper-linked text, should contain your important keywords. It is good to work with ten different options of title and description as it not only gives you more room to play with several keywords, but it also helps search engines give you a wider keyword coverage.

When soliciting external links, it is better to provide your own "cut and paste" HTML code. Webmasters like it when a ready to paste HTML code is available for them to use, to provide a link to your website.

Anchor text therefore comes on top of the checklist in your SEO initiatives.

ALT Tags:

The alt attribute is commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as an image's "alt tag". It is not intended to provide "pop up" text or tooltips when a user's mouse hovers over the image, though alt text has historically been presented in this way in some web browsers; HTML's title attribute is intended for supplementary information that can be used in this way. (To use alt correctly and suppress the tooltip that some web browsers generate, a web author can use an empty title attribute.)

When you're trying to create effective page content that will appeal to both human visitors and search engine spiders, you need to get the most out of every page element. One way to do this is to use ALT and TITLE attributes to the images.

As said ALT attribute is designed to be an alternative text description for images. ALT text displays before the image is loaded.

Benefits of good ALT and TITLE text:

* Enhance the browsing experience of visitors with disabilities.
* Increase your page's keyword density score and relevancy for your targeted keywords. (Calculate your page's keyword density with Page Primer and find out if you've used your keywords too little - or too often.)
* Provide valuable information to all your visitors with descriptive link titles and descriptive text about other page elements.

Be careful not to make your ALT and TITLE text too long because all Netscape browsers display it on one line. If you try to stuff several sentences of text into a single attribute, your Netscape visitors may only be able to read a portion of it.

Few coding techniques give you so many benefits for so little effort.

Let us discuss about Hx Tags in the next post.

The most important factor in search engine optimization is the Page Title. Page Title is the first SEO element search engine ranks the website as it visits it.
Some of the important factors that will help in deciding a good page title are as follows:
The page title should describe the main theme of the web page & include your best keyword or key phrase that is related to the content of the page. Don’t use your company’s name in the title, unless the company’s name is extremely popular.
Many search engines will only index the first 150 characters, while it can only display up to 60 characters. So, try to limit your page title to 40 characters as this will ensure that the complete page title will be displayed in the search engine results.

The proper place to add a title tag is the Head section of the HTML code. When the web page is downloaded in the browser, this title tag is displayed in the title bar of the Web browser. Each web page should have its own unique title that is absolutely related to the web page’s content.
Look at the image working example of the title element...

Meta Description:

The purpose of the meta description tag was twofold: to help the page rank highly for the words that were contained within it, as well as to provide a nice description in the search engine results pages.

The meta description tag may mirror the opening paragraph of your page. The meta description should be specific to the page it is referring to and contain keywords and keyword phrases found in the page title, page heading and first paragraph of page content. And importantly it must be unique to all the pages.

Your meta description tag should be concise, within 140 to 200 characters. Truncation will vary depending on the search engine and the number of characters displayed in the search results. It appears in the section of the web pages.

The meta description tag takes the form as shown in the image:
Meta Keywords:

The META Keywords Tag is where you list keywords and keyword phrases that you've targeted for that specific page.
For those search engines that are META enabled, the META Keywords Tag used to be one of the most important areas after the title element and page description. This tag has been abused over the years by marketers and consumers alike, that the search engines have decreased the relevance of the keywords tag. In some instances, the keywords tag has been deemed irrelevant.

10 day SEO Guide to Supercharge your Online Business - Keyword Research & Analysis

Written on 12:52 AM by Mrudula

Before going on to keyword Research let me discuss about one of the most common misconceptions about conducting keyword research for a search engine optimization campaign. Many of us believe that you already know which terms a user would use to find your site. But we don't, at least not without doing some research. We may know what our site is about and how we, the site owner, would find it, but it's difficult to predict how a user would go about looking for it. Remember, users probably don’t work in the same industry that we do. If they did, they wouldn't need us. When describing the site or product, break away from industry speak. Users aren't searching that way and if you center your site on these terms, they'll never find you.

Step 1: Create the List

The initial idea of keyword research can be trying to come up with the perfect combination of words to drive users to our site, and allow the engines to see and suggest our site.

As the first step create a list of potential keywords. Brainstorm all the words you think a user would type into their search box when trying to find our services or products. This includes thinking of phrases that are broad and targeted, buying and research-oriented, and single and multi-word and come up with enough words to cover all the services and products site offers. If it is a brand new website or site with no proper visibility avoid using overly generic terms like 'shoes' or 'clothes'. These words are incredibly difficult to rank for and won't drive qualified traffic to your site. Focus on words that are relevant, but not overly used. For example rather than using ‘cars’ try using ‘used cars’, ‘secondhand cars’, ‘hundai cars’ etc…

If you need help brainstorming ideas, ask friends, colleagues for help. Sometimes they are able to see the site differently than the way we see it. Also, don't be afraid to take a peek at your competitor's Meta Keyword tag. What words are they targeting? How can you expand on their keyword list to make yours better? It's okay to get a little sneaky here. All's fair in love and search engine rankings :)

Step 2: Using keyword research tools

After creating the list , the next step will be to determine the activity for each of your proposed keywords and narrow the list to only include highly attainable, sought-after phrases that will bring the most qualified traffic to the website.

There are few good tools out there to help us in determining how much activity keywords are receiving. Some for you:

Overture Keyword Selector Tool

Wordtracker

Google AdWords Keyword Tool

Along with them Google Suggest is a great way to find synonyms and related word suggestions that may help you expand your original list.

Step 3: Finalizing the list

Now that we know the activity of each and every, it's time to narrow down the field and decide which terms will make it into coveted final keyword list.

Create a spreadsheet or some other visual that will allow you to easily see each word's conversion rate, search volume and competition rate (as given to you by the tools mentioned above). Calculate how viable that term is for the website and narrow down the list.
The first step in narrowing down your list is to go through and highlight the terms that most closely target the subject and theme of the web site. Remove all the words that are not relevant to the site or that you don't have sufficient content to support (unless you're willing to write some). You can't optimize for words that you don't have content for.

Create a mix of both broad and targeted keywords. You'll need both to rank well. Broad terms are important because they describe what the web site does; however, they won't increase the level of qualified traffic coming into the site.

For example, say the site sells cowboy boots. It may be natural for the site to focus on the broad search terms "boots" and "cowboy boots". These words are important because they tell the search engines what the site do and may increase visitors, but the traffic we receive will be largely unqualified. Users will arrive on your site still unsure of what kind of boots the site talk about. Do we offer traditional cowboy boots, stiletto cowboy boots, toddler cowboy boots, suede cowboy boots or women's cowboy boots? By only targeting broad terms, users won't know what we offer until they land on your site.

Targeted terms are often easier to rank for and help bring qualified traffic. They also make the subject matter expert to the search engines, since the targeted terms strengthen the theme created with the broader phrases. Sticking with our example, targeted terms for cowboy boots site may be "men's cowboy boots", "blue suede cowboy boots", "extra-wide women's cowboy boots", etc. Broad search terms may bring higher levels of traffic, but it's targeted, buying-oriented terms like these that will maximize conversions.

Step 4 :Plan the attack

The final list of about 10-20 highly focused keywords are ready, now its time to plan them for focusing them. If keyword research is done in right manner, at least some of the words on the list already appear in your site content, but some of them may not. Start thinking about how many pages need to be created to support new words, and how and where the keyword phrases will be used.

It is always better to use after three or four related keywords per page (five if you can balance them properly). Any more than that and you run the risk of diluting your page to the point where you rank for nothing. Make sure to naturally work the keywords into your content and avoid over-repetition that may be interpreted as spamming. Your content should never sound forced.

Your on-page content isn't the only place where you can insert keywords. Keywords should also be used in several other elements on your site:
• Title Tag
• Meta Description Tags
• Meta Keywords Tag
• Headings
• Alt text
• Anchor Text/ Navigational Links

You've spent a lot of time molding your keywords; make sure you use them in all the appropriate fields to get the maximum benefit.

Step 5: Ongoing Process

Congratulations. We have created the list, checked it twice, made usage of keyword research tools and are now off to go plan the attack. But we are NOT Done!

As the user and the site's needs change over time, so will the keywords. It's important to keep monitoring the keywords and make tweaks as necessary. Doing so will allow Search Engines show you in top positions then our competition and keep moving forward.

Will discuss more on Page title and Meta data

A Day in an SEO’s Life

0

Written on 2:42 AM by Mrudula

I’ve been a working as an SEO since 2004. Following is an account of a day in my life of an SEO
As an SEO: The Daily Rundown
6:30 am -8:00 am: I set my alarm to get up at this time because I’m not a morning person. I would climb out of bed sometime between 6.30 and 7:00 am.
The first thing I like to do is to see my face in mirror and get my coffee; usually even before I brush my teeth. Maybe gross, but necessary to get the brain cells working

8.00 am – 8.30 am:
Once I get in to the cab, will discuss more about how was the day with my friends and listening to FM (Life in Bangalore with Rajni saru & B’day bakara program)
8.30 am – 9.15 am: Quickly will check my mails (Google, Yahoo! Mail & MSN accounts) and will post interesting topics on SEO, Movies and others. In the mean time my sweet sister (who is working with me in same office) will irritate me by asking me to come for Breakfast.

9.30 am – 1.30 pm:
After Lite breakfast, will check my calendar for the day. Will recheck the follow up tasks & plan accordingly for the rest of the day.
First I will check how the sites are performing on daily basis, how the traffic growth is and more, if any necessary will request my sister to work on those immediately. (100% she will scold me for that but finally she will complete that task)
After SEO, I will work on other Project reports to send wide audience on how everything is going on every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday. Other than this I will work on other analysis to get the best from my side.
To get a break from work me and any of my colleagues will go and play for TT till I am get tired or someone calls me for some work or lunch

1.30 pm to 2.30 pm:
I do my best to go and have lunch with my sister and Reethi. We will have nice time while having lunch by discussing all kind of stuff.
After my lunch, no matter how lite I eat, I’m usually sleepy for the next half hour to 45 minutes. So I surf for a little bit or blogging until I feel my second wind kicking in.
By 3pm or so, I start to feel more energized and will work right through until 5pm

5.00 pm to 5.30 pm:
Me and my sister will sit for sometime and chat more about how was the work and other stuff, in the mean time she will be busy in filling SUDOKU in News Paper. We will have sandwich or maggi and juice to fill in stomach

5.30 pm to 6.15 pm:
Will start back from office in the same cab with my sister
Once reached home after one or one half hour break, again I will open my laptop to check my mails and blogging too…
After my dinner, will go to bed by hearing some melody songs…
As you can see, it’s a full day.
You can also share What’s your day like?
