If the competition in the small car market was not hot enough, here's the latest. India's largest selling small car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki launched its fifth global model small car in Paris today. The car will be produced exclusively in India, at Maruti Suzuki India's production facility at Manesar. The car has been launched with an aim of making India a small car export hub by Suzuki and the company has set an export target of 2 lakh units from the country by 2010-11. Suzuki A-Star is expected to be priced around Rs 4 lakh and would be exported to Europe as Alto.

The car manufacturer will use the K-series engine for the gasoline driven car and the engine production will begin in October this year. A-Star has been positioned as an A2 premium segment car. The A2 segment has a 71 per cent share of the Indian passenger car market which is about 1.3 million units. The A-Star model is part of the Rs 9,000-crore investment plan spread across five years (ending 2010).

Speaking to a selection of Indian mediapersons at the sidelines of the Paris Motor Show on Thursday, Mr Toshihiro Suzuki, Board Member and Senior Managing Executive Officer, Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan said that the company will continue to market all of its current small cars that are in its portfolio in India, including the Alto, Wagon-R and Zen Estilo.

Mr Suzuki ruled out the possibility of the company taking the Tata Nano head on with a product of its own, since the Tata Motors cars is addressing the two-wheeler buyers segment, which is not the target buyers of MSIL’s cars.
