Anchor Text:

Those who have done some serious reading about search engine optimization, probably would have come across the phrase 'anchor text optimization' or 'optimization of anchor text'.

The anchor text or link label is the visible, click able text in a hyperlink.

While the above example seems like overkill, this is just to illustrate how you can accommodate your important keyword phrases by carefully rewording the text of your web pages. If you feel that the standard blue underlined hyperlinks appear ugly on your website, then you can re-format its HTML markup code to change color of the text and get rid of the underline without losing the power of the anchor text.
You may not have noticed, but the first paragraph also has the same keywords hyper linked, but without usual underlines. Bring your mouse over the keywords to notice your cursor show up the hyperlink.

Optimizing Anchor Text of External Links

Keywords within the anchor text are equally useful from links pointing to your website. If you are pursuing or considering a link building campaign, put some serious thought in writing multiple options of the title and description of the link pointing to your website.

The "title" which is usually used as the hyper-linked text, should contain your important keywords. It is good to work with ten different options of title and description as it not only gives you more room to play with several keywords, but it also helps search engines give you a wider keyword coverage.

ALT Tags:

The alt attribute is commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as an image's "alt tag". It is not intended to provide "pop up" text or tooltips when a user's mouse hovers over the image, though alt text has historically been presented in this way in some web browsers; HTML's title attribute is intended for supplementary information that can be used in this way. (To use alt correctly and suppress the tooltip that some web browsers generate, a web author can use an empty title attribute.)

When you're trying to create effective page content that will appeal to both human visitors and search engine spiders, you need to get the most out of every page element. One way to do this is to use ALT and TITLE attributes to the images.

As said ALT attribute is designed to be an alternative text description for images. ALT text displays before the image is loaded.

Benefits of good ALT and TITLE text:

* Enhance the browsing experience of visitors with disabilities.
* Increase your page's keyword density score and relevancy for your targeted keywords. (Calculate your page's keyword density with Page Primer and find out if you've used your keywords too little - or too often.)
* Provide valuable information to all your visitors with descriptive link titles and descriptive text about other page elements.

Be careful not to make your ALT and TITLE text too long because all Netscape browsers display it on one line. If you try to stuff several sentences of text into a single attribute, your Netscape visitors may only be able to read a portion of it.
